The Techකතා Big Meetup

After participating in some of the recent tech meetups around Colombo, This seems to be more of a success. It was held in DHPL Building on 14th July 2014 with a participation of over 100 Geeks from around the country.

With a well organized agenda, interesting topics and discussions about Mobile App Development and 3D Printing, and a great Q & A Session.

I was actually a little bit late when i reached the place, and the Mobile App Development Session by Microsoft Sri lanka was already in progress. It was about the Windows App Studio . It uses a Wizard based navigation to let users easily create a fully featured application, which then can be downloaded and published on the store, or can use the source code to further develop the app using Visual Studio.

Next session was an in depth Development Session about Windows mobile applications using Visual Studio. Which covered details about the latest Windows 8.1 development and its new features, including the ability to develop a single application to be compatible with both the Window 8.1 and Windows Mobile 8.1 with only a slight modification to the code.

Then comes the Q & A Session which consisted of a panel of 3 people to answer the questions from the Audience. Everyone came up with questions regarding Mobile Development until they were told that the Q & A Session was for any technology related question. That’s when the interesting questions came up and made an really interesting session with lots of knowledge on different areas of technologies, and not to forget the fun of joking around of some of the well known big companies and there services.

Next was the most awaited 3D printing session by Nissanga Warnapura of 3D Concept Studio. While explaining how 3D printing works and details about the methods and materials and the real world usage of 3D printing, that became a very interesting session for everyone, specially with the live printing demonstration with an Ultimaker2 3D printer. Look what it printed! [ LINK HERE ]

After that it was the time for Leap Motion and Hackernest. Leapmotion demo was conducted by Redline Technologies, while explaining the current limitations of input devices for some of the practical situations, and the usage of a handsfree device like Leapmotion in such cases, which is why its becoming popular nowadays.

The last session, HackerNest was about a new Social meetup starting up in Sri lanka. Its where people from different areas in technology get together and have a casual talk and get to know each other.

Everyone had an interesting and a useful time. It wasn’t just a “Listen to the speakers” type event, but more of a fun event for all the geeks. also, Good Snacks and Lunch made everyone focus better without being hungry 😛

Thanks Kalinga and Techkatha and everyone else who organized the great event and looking forward for the next meetup!

Not Using AI Is a Choice, No more excuses

Frontier AI companies like OpenAI and Anthropic are competing hard, while open source models are catching up fast. This competition is driving costs down. The price per 1M tokens keeps dropping, which means you can do a lot more for a lot less. So the old excuse of 'I don't have the budget to use AI in my business' is quickly disappearing.

Day 5 of 31: Connections and Caffeine

The first Monday of the new year always feels like a reset button. For our service company, yesterday marked the official restart, and as expected, it was a busy one. The day was filled with catch-ups, follow-ups, and lots of reconnecting with clients who had patiently waited for us to get back into full swing.

Day 4 of 31: When the Day Slips Off Track

Some Sundays move at their own slow pace, and yesterday was one of them. I went into the weekend feeling excited to refactor a piece of code that’s been bothering me for weeks. But by Sunday evening, the work was still unfinished and instead of accepting that, I spent way too much time complaining to
